BBQ sauce, the nectar of the Gods. I have said it before and I will say it again, it just makes everything taste better. Normally I prefer sweeter sauces, but recently I noticed that all the sauces in my fridge were more savory or even spicy, so clearly that needed to change. Serendipitously, a company named Kyvan reached out to me about trying some of their bbq sauces. Don’t you just love when things happen like that? I browsed through their website and decided on their Sweet BBQ Sauce and Sweet Potato BBQ sauce. I have never had a sweet potato sauce before, so I was extra excited to give that one a try.
While I am waiting for something to arrive, I like to do a little research on the brand, and Kyvan has a really neat history. It was created by a former NFL player, Reggie Kelly, and all his products are old family recipes. He wanted to share the love and passion he has for food, and these recipes, with the world and so Kyvan was created. The name is a combination of his two children’s names, which I thought was pretty cool. You can read his whole story on the Our Story page of their website.
Let’s talk sauce. First I tried the Sweet BBQ Sauce. Just as the name says, it is sweet, but not too sweet. I found this to be a tomato forward sauce with sweet undertones and punch of spices (not spicy just spices) like onion and garlic. The sauce is a beautiful rich dark color and you can see bits of spices throughout. It has a really great consistency, not too thick, not too thin, right there in the middle with the perfect viscosity to be used on meat or veggies, or as a dipping sauce.
Now onto the Sweet Potato BBQ Sauce. I hate when people say this, but this one is really hard to describe. It has the most unique flavor profile. To start, it’s sweeter than the Sweet BBQ Sauce which I was not expecting. I can’t tell if I can taste the sweet potato, or if I am looking for it, but I swear you can taste sweet potato, and it’s pretty front and center too. This sauce is quite thin, significantly thinner than the other sauce. I get a hint a tomato flavor here too, but mostly I get sweet. Not cloyingly so, but definitely on the upper echelon of sweet. This sauce also has a really rich dark color, in fact it’s darker than the Sweet BBQ sauce.
Something to note, the Sweet BBQ sauce does have high fructose corn syrup, but the Sweet Potato does not. On the label of the sweet potato one it touts, “Premium Sweet Potatoes & Honey. Natural Ingredients, No High Fructose Corn Syrup, Made In Small Batches”.
Both sauces were quite unique, they really didn’t taste like anything I have tried before. I love the passion that this company has for food, and their arsenal of products are continuing to grow daily. Right now they offer salsas, sauces, seasonings, jams/jelly, and I am sure they will not stop there. For a full lineup of their offerings, or to purchase one of their products you can visit their website www.kyvan82.com.
I want to thank Kyvan for generously sending me these sauces to review, and I look forward to trying more things from this growing brand.
