I have a bit of a bbq sauce addiction. In fact, I probably have 15-20 jars in my house at any given time, and use one pretty much every day. Just like I said on Twitter recently, I am pretty sure bbq sauce makes everything better. So it should come as no surprise that I enjoy going to different bbq supply stores looking for new sauces to try, which brings me to my review today on Blues Hog Smokey Mountain BBQ Sauce. It seemed like every store I went into had this brand so I thought I needed to give it a try. I really wanted to try their original sauce, but when I decided to finally pull the trigger the only option the store I was at had was the Smokey, so that’s what I bought. I enjoy smokey sauces, so I was cool with that.
The minute I got it home, I opened the jar to give it the sniff and taste test. Ok, so I am a little weird, but when it comes to rubs and sauces I like to smell them first before tasting them, I feel like I get a better tasting experience that way. To start, it has a super dark, rich color and the consistency is quite thick which I personally love. Your nose is immediately hit with a smokey yet sweet smell, along with a little pepper undertone. I always joke that I have the nose of a pregnant woman, and no I am not pregnant, but I have always has a keen sense of smell, which makes sense why I like to smell stuff before tasting something.
After getting a good whiff, I moved on to taste. First I just tried it plain, which doesn’t always do a sauce justice, because sometimes a sauce doesn’t stand well on it’s own, but when mixed with food or a second sauce will all of a sudden come to life. Blues Hog, however, easily stood on it’s own. With early notes of smokey, followed by a robust savory taste with hints of peppers and then finished with a lovely sweetness. This is a really well rounded sauce that was an immediate hit to my taste buds. If spicy is your thing, than this is not the sauce for you because there really isn’t any spice to it, but it’s packed with a smokey, savory, slightly sweet flavor that has so far paired well with everything I have tried with it.
According to the company,
Blues Hog Smokey Mountain is a unique grilling/finishing sauce that combines the rich blend of high quality ingredients found in Blues Hog Original with the added depth of natural hickory smoke. Blues Hog Smokey Mountain is an outstanding basting sauce for chicken, ribs, pork, beef and can be used in side dishes such as baked beans.
Based on my experience, I would agree with everything they said, except I would add that it makes a great dipping sauce too. I have used it as a dipping sauce for all different types of meats, as well as put it on a baked potato, and vegetables. Have you ever tried just sour cream and bbq sauce on a baked potato? It’s awesome, hands down one of my favorite ways to eat a potato.
Now that I have tried their smokey, I cannot wait to try their other sauces which include the Original, Tennessee Red (a vinegar based sauce), and their Honey Mustard Sauce. On their website all jars sell for $6.99, but you can also find them in many bbq supply stores across the country.
