I love pizza. What I don’t love is trying to form the dough. I have watched countless YouTube videos, I have made my own dough and tried store bought and no matter what I can never get it to shape properly. On top of that, I end up with flour all over the place, which drives me crazy and by that point I am wishing we had just ordered a pizza.
Once I gave up on forming my own dough I went on quest to find something store bought I could use to make pizza at home. I tried all the pre-made crusts found in the grocery store, in the frozen food section, in the dairy section, you name it I tried it, and then I discovered Naan. Naan was the answer to my pizza making prayers.
First off, it’s the perfect size for an individual pizza. At first I thought it might be too small, but it’s not, it’s the perfect size. Next, it’s the perfect thickness, it allows for a crispy crust, with just the right amount of char, without being too doughy or too thin. Lastly, and most important, you can buy it frozen or keep it in the freezer and take it out and use it anytime you want, and you can buy it in bulk at Costco. They even make flavored Naan, which I highly recommend trying. It’s like getting a pizza with a flavored crust.
Anytime I am craving pizza I just bust out a Naan, defrost it in the microwave or toaster oven for a few minutes, than top it with sauce (extra sauce for me please), toppings and cheese. Confession time, I am lactose intolerant, so I really shouldn’t be eating cheese, and a lot of times when I make my own pizza I don’t use cheese at all. I will use some Parmesan cheese because fun fact, once cows milk cheese has aged for 6 months or more, the lactose enzyme is longer there, so it’s safe to consume for lactose intolerant people like myself.
Once my pizza is ready to cook, I put it in my Blackstone Outdoor Pizza oven, and after about 90 seconds or so, it’s done! I love that pizza oven, it gets so hot, and get the cheese all melty and bubbly (when I am using cheese), the crust gets nice and crispy and I also get that little bit of char that I just love. Totally unrelated to pizza, but I will often take my smoked wings and finish them off in the pizza oven, it works like a broiler and gets the wings nice and crispy.
If you love pizza, but struggle like I do to form your own dough, I highly recommend giving Naan a try. I like to buy mine in bulk at Costco, but Trader Joes has a garlic one that is amazing, so anytime I make a Trader Joe’s run, I always stock up.
Pizza is a staple in our household, even Arrow likes it.
